Pre teen camp "G.L.O.W" 2011

G.L.O.W = Go Light Our World

This year at pre teen camp I was the leader for ten third graders and I thought I would be okay, piece of cake! I did sixth graders last year so how hard can it be? ...well, what you don't know is that third graders are the youngest grade at pre teen camp so all my girls are here for the first time. I quickly learned that there is in fact a difference in sixth graders and third graders. First of all, third graders are much more dependent on you. I actually had to paint their own nails and cut their own pancakes at breakfast and make sure they ate! I was like, really?? And with third graders they complain a lot more and this year I lost my voice for the very first time because my girls wouldn't scream! The last two nights they did because I told them they had to scream for me. But with third graders I had to hold all their money and they had many many many questions. But I love them. Especially my group of girls. I had a little girl homesick/actually sick Monday and Tuesday and woulnt eat anything for breakfast lunch or dinner. I remember before camp being told what to do if one of the kids gets homesick you're suppose to keep them busy, talk to them and don't mention their mom. Well Tuesday during afternoon rec the little girl Grace was doing fine. She even ate a snow cone and a popsicle and asked me if she could get a powerade. So I was thinking everything was A-Okay! But when we got back to the cabin she got sad again. So while the other girls were playing around I leaned over her bed and talked to her. And I had no idea what to say and so I prayed in my head for God to help me. Well we began talking about her favorite sport, which is volleyball, and how most of the girls in our group plays with her or against her and pretty soon I had her laughing and the other girls jumped in and started laughing with her and then I pulled out the green nail polish (our churchs color was green this year) and she and everyone else wanted me to paint their nails before dinner. This is one reason why I love kids...it is so easy to talk to them! Anything random works! And the best part is, they think boys have cooties, their showers are 5 minutes, no blow drying or straightening their hair, no make up and only one shower a day! I was the only one to get up early to straigten my hair, which I only did once because we're at camp! And I was the only one with make up(mascara and eye liner). Down side is that they're little kids so they ask "why do you have red polka dots on your face?"... And you can't have a deep personal conversation with them. But I love these girls and I look forward to seeing them grow every year. Next year as fourth graders they will have matured which I hear the difference between third and fourth graders is big. I love the fun songs in worship and I love hearing kids sing along to the serious songs. I'm finding myself loving kids more and more, especially working at the ymcas kids zone :). I dont know what God is teaching me through this or where He wants me, but I'm enjoying the blessings and experiences He gives me! God is SOOOOOO GOOD! :)
