This semester I am volunteering for the YMCA in Arlington as a soccer coach for 1st grade girls.
I grew up playing soccer but I've never been a coach. Parents at my church have mentioned that I should consider coaching a team because the YMCA is always looking for more coaches and they Always ask the parents whether they know how to play or not. I've always put off the idea of coaching until this summer when I got asked again to coach.
When I got my team roster and I had to call my parents about the first week of practices I was so nervous! I hate talking on the phone, and I'm not good at talking to parents. But if I'm going to be a teacher I need to learn how to talk to parents.
I knew I couldn't do it alone, so I wrote out what I was going to say and prayed God would help my words flow. I'm sure I sounded flustered at first on the phone, and I'm thankful I had to leave voicemails on a lot of them. but what I discovered was, the fact that I took the time to call, reach out, and love on their girls, the parents were so open and excited to meet me!
It was akward at first, but the more I stayed in contact and appeared organized, the parents trusted me as their coach.
and that's how I should be as a future teacher and minister. to gain the trust of the people I have to show myself trustworthy. And that is only done by the grace of God!
I'm learning so much how to be a teacher and a coach through this experience, and I know God planned for me to be a coach this semester to teach and grow me more with his purpose and plan for my life!
I look forward to every Thursday at 6:30 and Saturday morning because I get to spend one hour investing and loving my players and their families!
In Christ Alone,
Molly Rae
